The City of South Gate has implemented the South Gate Media Information Center, a Multi-lingual Alert Notification System designed for cities and police departments to quickly notify residents, businesses and the media with important information about police activity, road closures, emergency evacuations, missing persons, wanted suspects, and more.

The website also allows residents to view information about crimes and activities in their police patrol area. The Media Information Center provides the ability to instantly send mass notification alerts via email, RSS feeds, text messages and web postings on the Emergency Alert Notification web page, and is able to be translated into 36 different languages.

47th Azalea Festival

March 17^th to 25^th in 2012

The City of South Gate has sponsored the Azalea Festival since 1966. It has become the City's annual celebration of its official flower, the Azalea. Community and civic leaders and city staff provide leadership and support to local organizations sponsoring and producing the festival's events and activities.

"The 2012 Festival theme is "Harmony Through Community."

The Festival will preserve all of the customs that have made it a community favorite for years, including the coronation of an Azalea Queen, Grand Marshall & Court, fundraising dinners for the most active service clubs in the community and a carnival for the entire family to enjoy.

The City Parks and Recreation Department has organized a Health Fair for the past 20 years at the Senior Center. This year the Fair will take on the theme of Healthy Eating, Active Living, Combating Childhood Obesity.

Residential Curb Address Repainting

Project HOPE has been authorized to repaint curb addresses throughout the City of South Gate. This service is being provided to the residents of the City based on a voluntary donation. Residents may be asked for a maximum donation of $15.00 with 15% of the proceeds going to Jade Family services. Jade Family Services, a nonprofit organization, will use the proceeds for family counseling, parenting education programs with a focus on juvenile delinquency within the City of South Gate community. Project HOPE is the only company permitted to perform address painting in the City. Representatives of Project HOPE must carry identification, an authorized flyer and permit with them at all times. Residents are encouraged to notify the Police Department if approached by anyone other than this company. For further information regarding curb address painting, please contact the Public Works Department at (323) 563-5785.

CITY MOVES ONE STEP CLOSER TO CONSTRUCTION MAJOR NEW REGIONAL SHOPPING COMPLEX TO BE NAMED AZALEA

On December 13, 2011, the South Gate City Council approved several actions in pursuit of its vision for the future. The approvals included: 1) a resolution modifying the Firestone Atlantic Avenue Intersection Project and Declaring the City's Intention to Vacate Mason Street; 2) Addendum to the Final EIR adopted February 12, 2008; 3) Site Plan 299 for a retail development up to 450,000 square feet; and 4) six Conditional Use Permits for alcohol service, four for On-sale (restaurants) and two for Off-sale (retail outlets).

These approvals culminate a year long effort and will move the project forward in a significant way. The decisions also keep the project on schedule for a summer 2012 ground breaking.

In late January or early February 2012, this item will again be in front of Council for approval of a financing package (terms yet to be determined). The developer Primestor is asking for approximately a $12 million subsidy from the City. The property that is being developed is not in a Redevelopment Zone; therefore any subsidy will be secured with General Fund dollars. The proposal is to use the newly generated sales tax dollars from the project to pay back the $12 million dollar subsidy over a 20-30 year period. The City could be obligating up to 66% of the first 1% sales tax leaving the 1% local sales tax generated from the City's Measure "P" untouched.

The date of the Council meeting when the financing will be discussed will be published on the City's website. The City encourages everyone to come and share their thoughts with Council as the project continues to move forward.

FREE High Efficiency Toilets

Central Basin Municipal Water District has been awarded a conservation grant from the California Department of Water Resources, which includes funding through the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California to provide free high-efficiency toilets, including installation for qualifying multi-family properties.
