California Avenue Street Rehabilitation Project

California Avenue Street Rehabilitation Project

California Avenue is a key corridor in the City. It fronts various residential and commercial properties. It is a major transit route and also serves the Civic Center where City Hall and the Police Department are located. This project will make various improvements on California Avenue from Santa Ana Street in South Gate to Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard in the City of Lynwood. The project consists of pavement rehabilitation, curb, gutter, sidewalk repairs, streetlight conduit replacement, traffic signal upgrades and other miscellaneous improvements.

Construction has begun and the City awarded the construction contract to All American Asphalt. The project will be paid for entirely by Federal Surface Transportation Program funds, Proposition C funds and Gas Tax funds. The cost for this project is $1,984,334 and is a public investmentin our City. Construction is expected to be completed December of 2008.

California Avenue will not be closed during construction. Temporary lane closures and parking prohibitions are planned which are necessary to repave the roadway. Parking prohibitions will be posted with a minimum notice of 48 hours. Special equipment will grind the roadway pavement followed by application of an asphalt overlay. The City's goal is to maintain four lanes open whenever possible. At a minimum two lanes of traffic, one per direction will be open at all times. Access to local businesses and residential driveways will be maintained. To minimize congestion we recommend that motorists consider alternative routes such as Otis Street and State Street. Public Works staff and the Contractor will use every effort to minimize inconvenience to area residents and business owners. Please revisit this website for periodic updates.

August 21, 2008 Progress Update-Street light conversion work is ongoing. This entails boring conduit under the sidewalk, setting up boring pits on the sidewalk, and installing services on the street. Partial lane and sidewalk closures are necessary for the machinery onsite. Alternative routes are marked.Curb, gutter, and sidewalkrepairs are anticipated to begin within the next one to two weeks. In some cases, repairs will affect driveways. Where these repairs are planned, the City and Contractor will coordinate with property owners. Our goal is to minimize impacts to access to your property.
