43rd Annual Azalea Festival

The Azalea Festival offers the opportunity for residents to celebrate community service, recognize the City's official flower, the "Azalea" and celebrate the joys of family, friendship and neighborhood unity. "South Gate United" is the 2008 Azalea Festival theme.

The Azalea Festival Committee participated in a lively discussion of ideas for this year's festival, seeking to incorporate fresh, new activities into the Festival's historical traditions. This year, the Azalea Festival will preserve all of the customs that have made it a community favorite for years, including the coronation of an Azalea Court, fundraising dinners for the most active service clubs in the community and a carnival for the entire family to enjoy. In addition, the Festival will also include some of the recent popular ones, such as a Casino Night, Youth Fashion Show, Youth Art Night and Miss Azaleita Contest!

The Azalea Festivals featured event is the crowning of the Azalea Queen. This event takes place in the South Gate Auditorium and recognizes a Senior Citizen who has been active in the community as a volunteer and leader. The Queen presides over the remainder of the Azalea Festival Events and represents the City of South Gate at other community events throughout the year.

This year in place of a parade during the Azalea Festival, the Chamber of Commerce will sponsor a "Queen and Grand Marshal Community Stage" that will feature performances of local talent on Sunday, March 16 from 1:00p.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Carnival site.
