Incorporated on January 20, 1923, South Gate is the sixteenth largest city in Los Angeles County and encompasses 7.5 square miles. South Gate is located just 12 miles southeast of downtown Los Angeles.

Climate

South Gate has a semi-arid Mediterranean climate with mild winters and hot, dry summers. The average annual precipitation is 14.8 inches per year with most occurring between November and April. Temperatures range from a low of 40 F to a high of 110 F. The average daily temperatures range from 54 F to 73 F.

Government

Form of government: Council-Manager. The City Council consists of five members, elected at large by the voting public, to serve four year terms. The Mayor and Vice-Mayor are elected for a one-year term by the council members. Legislative Districts - State: 30th (Senate), 50th (Assembly); Federal: 39th (Congressional).

There are 9 parks in the City of South Gate, representing over 65 acres of recreational area. They include: Circle Park, Hollydale Community Park, Cesar Chavez Park, Gardendale Tot Lot, Hollydale Park, South Gate Park, Stanford Avenue Park and State Street Park. The 96 acre South Gate Park is home to the Municipal Auditorium, the Girls' Clubhouse, the Sports Center, the Senior Citizen Building, a 3 par golf course, an Olympic size indoor swimming pool, 6 tennis courts, 6 indoor basketball courts, 10 outdoor basketball courts and 10 baseball fields (9 lighted). Access to the Southern Avenue Bike Pedestrian Way and the Rio Hondo Bicycle Trail is conveniently located within the City.

Public Facilities

In addition to those listed in the "Recreation Facilities" section, other public buildings include: Hollydale Community Building, El Paseo Police Substation, Fire Stations 54 and 57, Leland R. Weaver Library, the Hollydale Library, the Chamber of Commerce, one main U.S. Post Office and two satellite Post Offices. The Civic Center Complex consists of City Hall, the Police Department, the City Hall Annex, and Civic Center Community Building, which contains the Museum and Art Association Center.
