Mayor Gil Hurtado

Gil Hurtado currently represents the City Council as Mayor, selected on April 8, 2008. Mayor Hurtado was elected to the City Council on March 8, 2005; his first term in office. Mayor Hurtado has lived in South Gate for over 22 years. He has been an active community volunteer for several years. He has served as the President of South Gate Junior Athletic Association (J.A.A.) for 12 consecutive years, and has been an active participant for 14 years. The JAA is a volunteer youth sports organization which serves over 2,500 children with organized baseball and basketball leagues.

Mayor Hurtado is employed by the United States Postal Service as a Supervisor in nearby Downey. He recently celebrated his 25th wedding anniversary. He has a son, John Paul, age 23, who plays in a Beatles tribute band as John Lennon called The Walrus, and is employed with the Redondo Beach Police Department; and a daughter, Natalie, age 21, who is a student at Cal State Long Beach.

Mayor Hurtado serves on the Executive Board of the Gateway Cities Coalition of Governments, where he focuses on the issues of improving Air Quality and Transportation for the citizens of South Gate.
