Vice Mayor Gil Hurtado
Gil Hurtado currently represents the City Council as Vice Mayor. Vice Mayor Hurtado was elected to the City Council on March 8, 2005; his first term in office, and was re-elected on March 3, 2009 for a four year term. He served as Mayor on April 8, 2008 for a year, and was selected to serve as Vice Mayor on April 10, 2012. Vice Mayor Hurtado has lived in South Gate for over 28 years. He has been an active community volunteer for several years. He has served as the President of South Gate Junior Athletic Association (J.A.A.) for 20 consecutive years, and has been an active participant for over 22 years. The JAA is a volunteer youth sports organization which serves over 2,000 children with organized baseball and basketball leagues.
Vice Mayor Hurtado is employed by the United States Postal Service as a Supervisor in nearby Downey. He recently celebrated his 31st wedding anniversary. His wife Lily is a Member of the South Gate Multicultural Women's Club; his son John Paul, age 28, plays in a Beatles tribute band as John Lennon called The Walrus, and is employed with the El Segundo Police Department; and his daughter Natalie, age 26, is a graduate of Cal State Long Beach, and is currently working on her Teaching Credential.
Vice Mayor Hurtado serves on the Executive Board of the Gateway Cities Coalition of Governments, where he focuses on the issues of improving Air Quality and Transportation for the citizens of South Gate, and is the Chairman of the I-710 EIR/EIS Project Committee. He serves as a Board Member to the Independent Cities Finance Authority, and as the Alternate Board Member to the Orangeline Development Authority.
